Marie practiced law in California before earning an LL.M. focused on animal law from
Western University in 2012. Her advocacy work for animals began at the municipal level,
with the goal of ending the killing of cats and dogs at the city pound. She and like-minded
individuals convinced the City of London to establish an animal welfare advisory
committee, create an animal welfare coordinator staff position, and hire a veterinarian.
These initiatives led to a city-run clinic, a trap-neuter-vaccinate-return program for feral
cats and spay/neuter of cats for low-income individuals. The city also adopted a humane
wildlife policy. When the current city council abolished the advisory committee, Marie
shifted her focus to her role as a community member of Western’s Animal Care
Committee, which oversees the care of animals used in research.
